St Aubin is one of the satellite villages that are often overlooked by those of us more familiar with the big names. However it is only just off the "Route des Grands Crus" and a short distance from Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet, the home of several of Burgundy's most instantly recognisable white wines. While the wines of St Aubin are somewhat lighter in style, the village nevertheless produces some elegant bottles at more affordable prices.
The Blondeau-Danne family own vineyards within the village and in adjoining appellations. M Denis Blondeau-Danne took over the running of the Domaine du Chateau from his father and his headquarters, the Chateau, is located in the centre of the village. He produces a small range of light and fragrant white wines as well as some unusual reds. The style of the Domaine tends towards lighter wines, even the Meursault being fresh rather than powerful. This makes an interesting contrast with the others, many of whom tend to aim for richer, fuller wines. This style runs through both his white wines and his reds. Their main white wine is the St Aubin 1er Cru, Le Village, which comes from vineyards that are just below the chateau, so close that as you walk across the terrace, the vines fall away beneath your feet. They also have holdings of 1er Cru Puligny Montrachet, as well as some Meursault La Piece Sous le Bois, in both white and red. La Piece Sous le Bois is an example of one of the many difficulties Burgundy poses for the consumer, as it may also be called Blagny La Piece Sous le Bois on account of it actually coming from the hamlet of Blagny. As Blagny is in the commune of Meursault, the vineyard carries the right to use either name. This vineyard of slightly over 11 hectares is divided between only four families (really quite a rarity in Burgundy's fragmented patchwork of vineyard ownership) and one of the others is Michel Ampeau, whose wine is sold as Blagny.
Finally, the family also has a tiny parcel of one of the smallest of Burgundy's Grand Crus, Criots Batard Montrachet. This Grand Cru, of only 1.57 ha lies on the junction of the roads to Chassagne Montrachet and Meursault, St Aubin and Chagny and M Blondeau-Danne's portion of 5 ares (500 square metres) produces a mere barrel of wine, or 25 cases per annum.
